The drug treaments don’t work…
The National Treatment Agency published their figures on drug treatment this week and the news isn’t good. Despite increases in people using substance misuse services last year (202,000) only 3.6% left drug free and out of those, a tiny percentage remain drug/alcohol free for more than 3 months. This in spite of the fact that the Government is throwing huge sums of cash at the addiction cow. So what’s going wrong? Well, that’s complicated, addiction is complicated. But models of care, therapeutic interventions and Government strategy are at the heart of this matter. The drugs might not work anymore, but neither does the treatment and a change of direction might now be called for.
